Physical or Physiological stress can cause hair to enter into a state of Telogen Effluvium – a condition that occurs when the normal hair growth cycle is interrupted and the follicles enter into a resting stage, resulting in an abrupt and diffuse hair loss.

Causes of Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium can be caused by many factors, the most common are, childbirth, fevers, severe infections, major surgery or illness, prescribed medications, hormones, chemotherapy, physiological stress and dieting.
This condition is temporary and the hair recovers as the resting follicles re-activate. It can take up to 8 months for this type of hair loss to decrease and for the resting follicles to begin to return to normal.
The signs of Telogen Effluvium are very visible and can be frightening, especially as during shampooing the excessively shed hair is particularly noticeable.
Always consult your GP, Dermatoligist or Trichologist if there is a sudden unexplained hair loss, they will give you a considered diagnosis, as chronic Telogen Effluvium can easily be confused with Female Pattern Baldness.
